Common Summertime Accidents

June 8, 2017

Summertime is a time for fireworks, barbecues, family and celebration, but it can also be an unsafe time of the year. As you gather with loved ones, it’s important to know about the preventable accidents that can wreak havoc during these months. These are 5 of the most common summertime accidents you need to know.

1. Car Crashes

According to Geotab, a GPS vehicle tracking company, an average of 119 deadly crashes occurred over the summer holiday of July 4th over the last 10 years, making it the most dangerous day to drive in the United States. As a driver, you should be very cautious on the road and avoid drinking and driving at all costs. Appoint someone to be the designated driver or leave your keys at home and take a taxi or Uber.

2. Firework Injuries

Fireworks are a leading cause of injuries during the summer, especially on Independence Day. Since they are explosives and they often shoot upwards, face and hand injuries are most common. Tips to avoid firework injuries include viewing them from at least 50 feet away and never picking up an ignited firework, even if it appears to be off. Between June 18 – July 18, 2016, there were an estimated 7,600 injuries sustained from fireworks.

3. Cooking Fires

The most common insurance claim on July 4, a popular summer holiday, is for...cooking fires. Prevent dangerous cooking fires caused by grills and smokers by keeping children away, having a fire extinguisher at hand and never throwing water on a grease fire.

4. Swimming Pool Accidents

Backyard swimming pool parties are a summertime staple, but beware because pools pose several dangers, especially to children. Always make sure kids are supervised when in or around the pool and be aware of anyone who may be drunk and attempting to swim or dive in a pool.

5. Boating Accidents

As people take to the water summertime activities, the potential for boating accidents increases. Independence Day, Memorial Day and Labor Day typically account for more than 1/3 of all boating-related accidents and fatalities. If you’re getting on a boat, wear your life jacket, be prepared for emergencies and don’t drink alcohol if you are the captain.
