At Jorgensen, Brownell & Pepin, P.C., the health and safety of our employees and our clients is a top priority. We are diligently monitoring the Coronavirus and closely watching official information from health authorities such as the Centers for Disease Control (“CDC”) and World Health Organization (“WHO”) as it relates to our community.
We ask you to join with us in general adoption of best practices as advised by the CDC is the best way to prevent the spread of any illness.
Protect yourself by practicing excellent personal hygiene. Remember to do the following:
- Be the steward of your own health and potential impact of any illness on others; if you are sick, stay home.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.
- Wash or sanitize your hands before eating.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Consider altering greetings (avoid handshakes) to be cautious.
While ensuring the health and safety of you and your family is very important at this time, it is also very important that you have proper estate planning measures in place. Despite there always being a risk of becoming incapacitated or passing away unexpectedly, events like the one the World is facing right now can often highlight the need for proper planning; facing one’s mortality is not easy but having a well-drafted estate plan in place can relieve stress of the unknown and facilitate conversations with loved ones that have been put off. In particular, everyone should consider drafting or updating their Medical and Financial Powers of Attorney and Last Will and Testament.
However, it is important that these legal documents are properly drafted and executed. While using online forms can be convenient, one needs to understand that laws vary by state, and the execution of a general form may or may not be compliant with such laws. These forms are drafted for the general public and are not tailored towards individual state laws or the nuanced and specific needs of a particular individual or family.
